  Differences: Wine refrigerator, wine tempering cabinet & wine storage cabinet
The terms wine refrigerator, wine tempering cabinet, wine storage cabinet and wine climate chamber are often used as synonyms. However, two different products hide behind the terms. Wine refrigerator is only the generic term. They are divided into wine temperature chambers and wine climate chambers.

A wine temperature cabinet has several climate zones to keep red and white wines at their serving temperatures. In most cases, these devices cannot regulate the humidity and do not have an activated carbon filter that protects the air in the interior from foreign odours. Wine temperature cabinets are therefore only conditionally suitable for longer storage. This type of cabinet is most frequently used in gastronomy.

Wine climate cabinets (also called storage cabinets) often have only one climate zone. Whether red or white wine, the ideal storage temperature for wine is between 10 and 14 °C with a humidity of about 75 percent. For this reason, high-quality wine storage cabinets have automatic humidity regulation. Exchangeable activated carbon filters protect the wine from the influence of bad odours from outside.

From how many bottles do I need a storage cabinet?
There are storage and temperature control cabinets in various sizes. While simple devices are already available for four or six bottles, storage cabinets usually start with 100 bottles and more. Exceptions also confirm the rule here.

If you only want to store a good dozen wine bottles, you can find out about an external storage option. Individual wine merchants offer the storage of their own bottles.

However, if you are one of those who have been completely infected by wine fever and your home is already like a wine shop, the purchase of a storage cupboard is definitely worth considering. Everything over 100 bottles is, in our sense, a case for the wine storage cabinet.

Special market or Internet: Where to buy a wine storage cabinet?
Whether you buy your wine storage cupboard conveniently online or get advice at a specialty store, we do not dictate to you. However, it is worth looking at a device in its natural state. The dimensions of a wine storage cupboard are often underestimated.

The weight also plays a role, especially for models with a glass door. Such a monster easily weighs over 120 kilos. Anyone who has ever tried to transport such a device to the second or third floor knows what suffering really means. That's why we recommend, no matter where you buy, that you always agree on a delivery free to the place of use and leave the towing to the experts.

Wine cabinets are a cost-intensive purchase. Ordinary appliances can hardly be bought for less than four-digit amounts. For this reason a price comparison is particularly worthwhile here. The differences from dealer to dealer can quickly amount to a few hundred euros.

The most important criteria when buying a wine climate chamber
Electricity consumption: Your wine climate chamber runs around the clock and 365 days a year. Therefore, you must not ignore the operating costs for such a device. It is therefore recommended to invest in a device of energy class A (better A+ and above).

Also the place of installation should be considered. The cooler the room, the less energy must be used for cooling.

Capacity The storage capacity of a wine cabinet is indicated in bottles. However, this information is for Bordeaux bottles. Other bottle shapes can drastically reduce the storage capacity. By the way: A climatic chamber loaded with the maximum number of wine bottles requires less energy.

UV-protection glass Do you want to store your wines properly and still present them appropriately? Understandably, a wine refrigerator makes a lot of sense in your own home and makes a statement. For this reason, many people choose a storage cabinet with a glass door. In this case, make sure that it is a special glass that blocks UV light.

Activated carbon filters Wines that have been stored for decades and sealed with natural cork can absorb odorous substances from the ambient air. For this reason, wine climate cabinets have built-in activated carbon filters that protect the interior from foreign odours, mould spores and the like. The activated carbon filters must be replaced regularly.

Ventilation In school we all learned: "Cold air sinks downwards and warm air rises upwards". This principle also applies to your wine refrigerator. Without a fan, a warm zone would develop in the upper part, while the lower wines would be stored too cold. With modern devices the ventilation can be switched on optionally, which is always recommended for a longer storage

Finding the right wine fridge
A strong Burgundy, a refreshing Riesling or a sparkling Champagne: A well stocked supply of exquisite grape juices is the dream of every wine lover. To ensure that these treasures taste good for a long time and do not lose any of their quality, they must be specially stored. However, not everyone has a dark and optimally tempered wine cellar at home - in this case a wine refrigerator is the solution. The adequate storage of wines makes special demands: Especially with noble and rare wines it is a heavy loss, if they become inedible due to wrong storage. A professionally designed wine refrigerator provides optimal conditions in which the wines can ripen in peace and develop their full aroma. Within our range, however, there are different models and functions to choose from.

How does a wine refrigerator work?
A wine refrigerator differs significantly from conventional refrigerators, which can be found in every kitchen. It allows the bottles to be stored in a dark place, because sunlight, UV radiation and neon light damage the wine. The most important aspects of storage are temperature and climate. Even if a cellar is present in the household, it often does not offer the ideal temperature and climate conditions to function as a wine cellar. Wines must be stored at a certain and constant temperature. With a wine refrigerator this can be optimally adjusted and controlled. It also offers the necessary humidity of about 70%, which protects wine corks from drying out and protects the wine from evaporation. A wine refrigerator must also provide the necessary ventilation for its precious contents. Wines should not be stored together with other foods, as the wine must breathe, but can absorb the aromas of other substances through the cork and eventually spoil. Therefore, the wine refrigerator should not be used for open food. The wine must also be at rest and should not be moved or exposed to vibrations. A wine refrigerator is therefore equipped with special shelves in which the wine bottles are stored in a constant position. The many wine refrigerator models on the market differ in size, price and functionality. In addition to the classic wine refrigerator, there is also a so-called wine tempering cabinet. These two models should not be confused, however, as they are intended for different functions: While the wine refrigerator is used for the permanent or long-term storage of wines and usually has several temperature zones, the wine temperature control cabinet is intended for briefly reaching an optimum serving temperature shortly before consumption.

What is a 2-zone wine refrigerator?
Depending on the grape variety, the requirements for optimal storage and drinking temperature also differ. Red wines, white wines, rosé wines and champagne must therefore be stored at different temperatures in a wine refrigerator. Strong and rich red wines unfold their aroma between 15 °C and 18 °C. White wines, on the other hand, require a slightly lower storage temperature of between 11 °C and 14 °C. This is the temperature at which white wines are stored. Rosé wines are optimally stored in a wine refrigerator at a temperature of between 7 °C and 12 °C. Sparkling wines and champagnes also often join the wine stock and require a temperature of 5 °C and 7 °C as sparkling wines. To allow different wines to be stored in a wine refrigerator, many models have several temperature zones. The most common is the 2-zone wine refrigerator. For example, red and white wine can be stored in the same cabinet, but at different temperatures.

What do I have to consider when buying?
Before purchasing a wine refrigerator, you must decide how and to what extent it is to be used. The following points will help you to make a rough decision:

Placement and size: Before you go into the technical details and subtleties, you should first consider how many bottles you want to store and where the wine refrigerator will ultimately be placed. For example, should it be integrated into a bar or kitchenette as a built-in refrigerator, or should it be a free-standing model? When making this decision, you should also pay attention to the direction in which the door of the refrigerator can be opened.
