Lake Pukaki is the largest of 3 nearly parallel
alpine lakes that stretch from north to south along the northern corner of
the Mackenzie Basin on the South Island of New Zealand. The other two lakes
are Lake Tekapo and Lake Ohau. All three lakes were created when terminal
moraines from retreating glaciers blocked the associated valleys, forming
moraine reservoirs. The lake is 8 km wide and 15 km long. Lake Pukaki is fed at its northern end by the much-publicized Tasman River and the Hooker River. The rivers draw their water in part from the melting Tasman Glacier and Hooker Glacier, which are located near Mt. Cook / Aoraki in the eastern Southern Alps. The total catchment area for Lake Pukaki is approximately 1,355 square kilometers. |
